Student engagement is the degree that students are actively participating in the classroom. It includes the amount of attention, optimism, and passion students show for what they are learning. It is important to have multiple means of engagement when considering group work and other class activities. Engagement is increased when the groups or class sizes are small. This encourages students to participate and leads to greater group or class accountability. As stated earlier the degree of attention curiosity, interest and passion that students exhibit during learning, affects the motivation of the students. Motivation increases when students see the benefits to them personally. In order to increase engagement, it is important to use what is meaningful to the students. When students are actively engaged in the classroom, there is less of a need for classroom management techniques. Student engagement increases their attention, focus and motivates students. This also helps students to be able to process and retain information as well as develop deeper thinking strategies.
