Tips for Teaching Students with mild Autism: |
- Be predictable, avoid distractions and sensory overloads. Unexpected things can become a distraction or a sensory overload for students with Autism.
- Use visuals - Keep language concrete. Phrase like 'go jump in a lake' literally mean go jump in a lake to people with Autism. Metaphors, Similes, and idioms are confusing and literal to the students. - Teach social skills directly - Each person with Autism is an individual. There is a quote I love: "if you've met one person with Autism, then you've met one person with Autism." - Transition warning help students move from one activity to another - Remain calm even during problem behavior - Use down time as a reinforcer |

- Keep language concrete. Students take things literally. - The student may need help with social interactions - Positive Reinforcements are helpful, punishments are not. - Be patient and calm - The student may get stuck on one subject in conversations. |
