Guidelines for working with Abrasive or Abusive Paraeducators
Ask first - Rather than yell and accuse, ask the paraeducator what they are doing and why. Doing so will help to prevent unnecessary frustrations and problems.
Be direct when having difficult conversations
Have conversations in private or with a single witness
When talking with the person, point out your concern with the person's approach, the desired behavior and the consequences for continuing the abrasive or abusive behavior. If appropriate, you can share how the behavior impacts you and ask for it to stop.
It is not uncommon for the abrasive person to turn this around on you and claim that you are being overly sensitive. Despite this, they will typically change their behaviors.
