Stress is a normal and necessary part of development. Stress normally involves an elevated heart-rate and mild elevation in hormone levels. Toxic Stress occurs when a child experiences strong, frequent and/or prolonged adversary such as physical/emotional/sexual abuse or neglect, violence and economic hardship.
ACES happen before the age of 18 and include violence in the home, neglect, abuse, and parent mental health issues or drug/alcohol abuse. The effects include inability to concentrate, health problems, inability to hold still, heart disease and cancer. Reducing it in the classroom by implement one-on-one time with teacher, create safe corners in the classroom, allow breaks, be predictable in schedule and behavior. |
