Transition services are the activities, experiences, and skills that make a big difference in student outcomes. These are a coordinated set of activities that help a student move towards their postsecondary goal. For example: job-shadowing, job fairs. This is a type of instruction, related service, community experience or development of employment for post-school adult life.
Examples of Transition Services:
- tour or research postsecondary programs - Research and contact local college disability services - Research college scholarship opportunities - Instruction in self-advocacy/disability awareness - Internship in the medical field - Apply for Vocational Rehabilitation services -Instruction in budgeting - Learn to use public transportation - Instruction in 504/ADA accommodations - Instruction (math, reading, writing)
Effective Practice:
These practices strengthen students' ability to have positive post-secondary outcomes. - Consider student's needs for instruction and practice in self-advocacy and disability awareness -community based instruction leads to better student outcomes for students who have difficulty generalizing skills to other settings -Work based learning and paid employment are strong predictors of post school success - Consider assistive technology instruction for all students - Consider WIOA pre-employment transition services - Just listing instruction such as math needs to have an explanation of what instruction is needed for postsecondary education.
