Informal Route
The informal route is an attempt to resolve the issue at a school level. This process would look like meeting together with a school administrator and bringing up the grievance in the school's professional problems committee. The school's professional problems committee should meet with the school's principal once a month in order to resolve contract and school issues that arise. In some cases, the union delegate may decide to discuss the issue with the principal in a private meeting. This can be done before heading towards a formal grievance. Benefits of the informal route: - allows individuals to find out if similar issues are occurring at the school - provides an opportunity for educators to band together to resolve the issue - maintains the relationship with the employer |
Formal Route
The formal route must be followed through before going to court. In this situation, the union files a grievance saying that a member's rights have been violated and provides the employer a good faith opportunity to make it right. In the situation where the employer fails to make the situation right, the union moves to arbitration and court. |
