Trauma informed practices are a method of understanding, recognizing, and responding to all types of trauma. It assumes that all individuals have experienced some history of trauma. It looks for the presence of trauma symptoms and acknowledges the role that trauma plays in that person's life. They increase protective factors surrounding at-risk students. It does this through emphasizing physical, psychological, and emotional safety. It does not do this through treating the symptoms of trauma, rather it provides supportive services. It helps students to regain a sense of control and empowerment.
