General Guidelines for all paraeducators in the classroom
Assist in the instructional process by helping with student progress and noticing student needs
participate in training
maintain a safe learning environment
build and maintain effective relationships and communication
Assess student needs and progress under the direction of the teacher
Assist in the instruction and supervision of students. This may involve completing assignments, reading material aloud, explaining directions, and explaining concepts, administering tests
Assist in providing for the special physical and emotional needs of students
Provide daily feeding and /or mealtime supervision, toileting, diapering and hygiene care as needed
Work effectively with students, teachers, parents, community agencies, and other groups while following strict confidentiality guidelines
Closely monitor and accurately document student physical and behavioral functioning
Take breaks - If you and a student are frustrated, take breaks. Make sure you are both in a rational state of mind before you come back together.
