There are many ways to review using summaries. Some of the techniques include: - one sentence summary - list 5 big ideas - paragraph summary These summaries can be saved by the students on notebook paper, or in a notebook/binder. They can also be graded then returned to the students.
One sentence Summaries
At the end of a lesson, students write one sentence about what they learned that day. Students share those sentences with a neighbor. This can also be used as a review activity by having students write a sentence about what they learned in the last class then share them with a neighbor.
List 5 Big Ideas
At the end of a lesson or as a review of the previous lesson, students list the 5 main ideas that they learned from the lesson/previous lesson. Students then share their ideas with a neighbor or small group and write down 5 more main ideas from the lesson/ previous lesson. This can also be done with vocabulary by asking students to list 5 vocabulary words they learned and their definitions instead of main ideas.
Paragraph Summaries
There are two options for this technique, first, students write a paragraph summary of what they learned in class. The second, students write a paragraph summary of a topic covered in class.
