Encourage sharing- sharing encouragement can be uplifting which can increase productivity. Teachers can encourage sharing through group work and partner sharing. This allows students to gain knowledge from one another and develop in the social-emotional domain. It also helps students learn different ways to do things and encourages creativity. This can increase motivation.
Certificates- a physical form that shows recognition of a particular trait or characteristic, ect… Students get a physical representation of their hard work and gain extrinsic motivation to do their best. It also shows meeting a certain level of knowledge and indicates what students have done.
Personalized praise- Praise should be honest and should support student motivation. It should be given in a way that verbally and nonverbally supports what is being said. Praise should be spefic and focus on student goals. It should also be informative feedback about effort and care.
Rubrics- can be used to grade test preparation. Such rubrics have sections of Excellent (I reread the text and compared the text to my notes, adding to my notes as needed. I sought help from others when I didn't understand and met with a study partner to review and discuss my understanding of key ideas), Good (I reviewed the text and my notes and added to my notes as needed. I sought help if I didn't understand something). Emerging (I skimmed through the text and looked at my notes), and Unsatisfactory (I read my notes once). A rubric is a scoring guide that describes different levels of performance, it should be one level above acceptable or proficient.
Display student work- students often feel empowered when they see their hard work is recognized and even used in an authentic audience.
Safe community- students know that learning is the most important thing in the classroom and not showing that they are better than one another. Being part of a safe community means that everyone feels comfortable and willing to participate.
