WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM YOUR READING AND OTHER PREPARATION MATERIALS?From the reading Families, Professionals, and Exceptionality chapter 6, I learned about the four elements of disability policy 1) equal opportunity 2) full participation 3) independent living 4) economic self-sufficiency as a result of ADA. Children are eligible for early intervention if they experience significant developmental delay or have a diagnosed physical or mental condition that carries a high probability of causing a significant developmental delay. I knew that children with disabilities had access for developmental delay and other disabilities, but I hadn’t made the connection that children with emotional disturbance can have services under the age of three as well. The resource that helped me learn the most was reading from the textbook. The text placed material in a different perspective than I have been taught the material before. Because of what I am learning, I actually contacted a family I have worked with who thinks their 3 year old child has ODD and told them about the resources and assistance. How do Traumatic Brain Injuries affect speech? Post 1What a traumatic Brain injury? Traumatic Brain Injury is an acquired injury to the brain due to an external force resulting in total or partial functional disability, psychosocial impairment which affects academic performance, adaptive behavior or social and emotional behaviors. The severity of of a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) from mild to severe: Mild: a concussion where the person remains awake after a force to the head but may lose consciousness for a few seconds, minutes or not all all. Following a concussion people typically experience dizziness, nausea, head aches and vision problems. Moderate: after a force, the person is lethargic and only has their eyes open to stimulus. Severe: the person is typically in a coma for six hours or longer. Who is effected by TBI? TBI is the leading cause of death in children and adults ages 1-44. TBIs can be a result of falling, vehicle accidents, being hit by or colliding with an object, assaults and others. There are about 2.5 million TBIs each year and many that go unreported. Concussions make up 90% of TBI (American Academy of Pediatrics article ). Most people recover within 1-3 months of a concussion (Brain Trauma Foundation). Fun Fact: Helmets do not protect the brain from concussions. Helmets protect the skull and scalp from injury. “Early intervention and management of mTBI is the most effective means of reducing the level of disability experienced by the injured person.” McCrea MA. Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Postconcussion Syndrome: The New Evidence Base for Diagnosis and Treatment. New York, NY: Oxford University Press; 2008 What is a Speech Impairment? A speech impairment or communication disorder that affects how people say words, and sounds. Language is the words we use to communicate. Speech impairments include stuttering, a language disorder, impaired articulation, or a voice disorder that negatively impacts academic performance. Four things to look at when assigning Augmentative and alternative communication to people with TBI: 1. the evolution of ACC use during recovery 2. the effect of cognitive impairments on multimodal communication 3. appropriate message representation 4. difficulties with ACC navigation from resulting cognitive impairments Next week: Sources: Brain Trauma Foundation.
